Some life happened, and now I'm abaft.

Ugh, I won't bore you with details but the Norovirus has recently gone through my entire family like a plague, even the cat!? Needless to say, hobby deadlines were missed. Thankfully it hasn't taken long for the New Year optimism to be crushed mercilessly and for things to return to normal!

A big welcome to my two newest followers, thanks very much for signing up!

I managed to get the last few out-of-stock EM4 minis that I missed out on in December. I emailed EM4 in the end and basically threw myself at their mercy. Lo and behold, They cast up the missing minis and they were delivered within 24 hours! I have thanked those responsible by email but I'm so grateful I am giving this shout out for EM4 here, too.

3 models from EM4's Spacelords range and one from the Future Skirmish range. L to R, Punk, Savage, Trader, Lady.

I am also (slowly) putting together a warband to take on Whiskey Priest's Felderburg Nether Port Watch and anyone else who takes part in the meeting-up part of the challenge. Below is the boss and first member, a lovely Viking mini from Wargames Foundry.

This fellow is seriously huge by 28mm standards and stands even taller than GW minis. A perfect Chaos Warrior to lead my damned warband.

The final days of January will bring painted minis for your viewing pleasure and February will bring more AAR's of games against Thantsants of Somewhere the Tea's Getting Cold. I may do a post about Judge Dredd soon too, I'm up to the 14th volume of the complete case files and it's so awesome I think I may need to talk about it with somebody.

Thanks for stopping by!

    1. We do seem to share a similar niche within an already niche hobby! I like to imagine there is one of us per wargaming nation. Thanks for the best wishes, we are all much better in my household now, just waiting for the father-in-law to recover.

    1. Thanks Chico, appreciate the sentiment. Little Foster was very miserable for a couple of days but is better today. I was going to do a mix of Foundry and Warlord/Mongoose stuff but thanks for the heads up I will have a look at the sale now.

  3. Sorry to hear that you and your family have been unwell. Looking forwards to seeing that Judge Dredd stuff you are talking about here, any connection with the impressive stuff I have seen from Warlord Games. Oh bugger, I have just remembered that I haven't sent those orks to you yet! You have my sincere apologies about that! Right, I am off to find a jiffy bag (for posting, not because I have someone been infected by the norovirus through the internet!)

    1. Thanks Orlygg, we are past the worst now though. Norovirus is like a mugging, violent but over quickly. As I said above, I like the Warlord stuff but the Foundry range is exciting too and maybe the Miniature Heroes range will provide a few bargains? I guessed those Orks had slipped your mind but I knew you had lots going on yourself, what with the dentistry, so I was happy to leave it for a while until you felt better, no need to apologise.

  4. Ah yes, I'm feeling that New Year positivity starting to fade what with taxes, vet visits, and job stress finally catching up. Great minis, though! When are you gonna do an Edible Campaign?! Haha.

    1. Yeah, the tax bill is not going to be fun this year and the builders working on the new house are helpfully over-running their deadlines as I type just to make matters worse. Glad you like those minis, I find good toys bring a game to life and I try to choose mine carefully. My RPG group is just getting back together after a forced break for a six week Call of Cthulhu campaign, when that's done I intend to run an edible D&D game so keep an eye out!

  5. Norovirus in January? Poor you lot, thats not pleasant. Hope everybody is better. I do love that viking model he is seriously bad ass. Like the assless one and yourself I am going through a 2000ad phase. I bought some of the foundry 2000ad figs and was rather surprised to find that they are in fact mahoosive! I mean bigger than is sensible big. I was quite gutted. so gutted in fact that I bought 2 dozen figs from forlorn hope games (same as em4 range but they do discounted packs and had 10% off last week) and managed to get 7 judges, 2 citi-def and 2 riot judges from the old citadel range off of ebay to console myself.

  6. Yes, not good, on NHS direct they say it's known as the 'Winter Vomiting Bug' as it's so common this time of year? Our little man (the boy, not the cat) has kept solids down today, the first time since last weekend, so I think it's finally all over!

I've been to the Foundry a few times this year and their stock is right there for you to paw over so I did notice the size of their stuff, it seems to be a trademark. I thought it might be OK for some of the Judges to 'loom large' so to speak but maybe not all the perps too. I will check out Forlorn Hope, I always wanted some citi-def.

    1. The mongoose/warlord citi-def are the only models I actually like from that range although the ape gang are growing in me. Interestingly there is a thread on frothers about painting JD figs, yellow for both shoulder pads or one gold one yellow?

    2. I bought one of the ape gang chimps to use as an armed Jokaero ages ago (just painted it orange) , it is a sweet model.

The art changed so much from one JD strip to another, you really can take a certain amount of license when painting up Judges. Colour only came in about 1989 I think, one of the artists was convinced Dredd was black for the first 12 years and thought he was illustrating him that way, I suppose gold/yellow is correct but might look a bit meh on a 28mm paint job. Time to learn non-metallic metallics? :/

  7. EM4 Doug is a great guy. He specifically cast up a few out of stock models for me last year and without exaggeration they were the cleanest casts that I have come across in my almost thirty years of toy soldiers (extra impressive because the were fur covered types). EM4 get my highest recommendation.

There is plenty of licence allowed for Dredd stuff, thats for sure. I went for the gold eagle pad and the yellow left pad, as per most of Ezquerras colour work. I went for that look because I found that, unusually, having a yellow pad AND a gold pad made the already pretty ostentatious uniform slightly less gaudy. Somewhat counterintuitive, but the figures look better that way IMO.

Some photos of my Foundry and Mongoose/Warlord judges:

Some better photos of just the Mongoose/Warlord Judges (they ended up using these photos in their newsletter actually, which was cool for a lifelong Dredd fan):

I happily mix the rather large Foundry stuff with the Mongoose figures, but I find the old Citadel Dredd miniatures to be too small to go comfortably with the rest of my miniatures. This is only in the case of the Citadel humans though, Im perfectly fine with using the old citadel robots and apes and even the rather bijou kleggs.

I recently got my hands on a few more Adeptus Arbites too. They will be joining my Justice Department in the same scheme: I dont see the point in painting up a second force of similar space police in a different outfit.

And if you want to talk Dredd comics, then Im all ears :) Get well soon.
